Equestrian Events and Quotas for LA28 Olympic Games Confirmed

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed the equestrian events and athlete quotas for the LA28 Olympic Games.

The equestrian program will consist of Individual and Team medal events in Jumping, Dressage and Eventing at the Los Angeles Games. These three equestrian disciplines have been part of the Olympic programme since 1912.

The IOC also confirmed that equestrian retains the 200 quota places it had at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the breakdown by discipline remains unchanged – 75 for Jumping, 60 for Dressage, and 65 for Eventing.

The decision to maintain the equestrian events and quotas was taken by the IOC’s Executive Board, which met in Lausanne (SUI).

Work on the Olympic cross-country course will begin in the coming weeks...

Alec Lochore, the FEI Level 4 Course Designer and Technical Delegate, has been appointed as the Eventing course designer for the Olympic Games LA28.

The Briton will be assisted by compatriot Michael Etherington-Smith, who will act as course advisor.

The decision was taken unanimously by the FEI Board at its in-person meeting on 17 and 18 June in Lausanne (SUI).

Lochore is a highly skilled course designer, with over two decades of experience in international Eventing. He brings a distinctive blend of strategic leadership, technical insight, and course design expertise.

“I would like to congratulate Alec Lochore on this important appointment,” FEI President Ingmar De Vos said.

“He holds excellent credentials as a first-class Eventing course designer but also as a technical delegate and an organiser. He was instrumental in advising the FEI on the cross-country feasibility at the LA28 equestrian venue at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia and we are confident that, in cooperation with Mike Etherington-Smith, he will design a course that challenges the world’s best while showcasing the heart of our sport to a wider global audience.

"Work on the LA28 Olympic cross-country course will begin in the coming weeks.”

'A great challenge'

Lochore served as the Eventing Manager at the London 2012 Olympic Games where he oversaw the cross-country planning and test events at Greenwich Park as well as at Tokyo 2020. He has also held roles at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ and numerous FEI Eventing European Championships.

The 53-year-old has served two terms on the FEI Eventing Committee and has been a member of various FEI Working Groups over the years.

Lochore added: "I am humbled, honoured and delighted to have been asked to design the cross-country track for the Olympic Games LA28.

“It will be a great challenge, and one which I am looking forward to immensely.

"I am fortunate enough to have been involved with the organization and planning of several Olympic Games, and each Olympics is unique and special. The Olympics is the biggest showcase that our sport – that any sport – has, and to be chosen as course designer is very exciting."

The Olympic Games LA28 will take place from 14 to 30 July 2028. Equestrian will be staged at Santa Anita Equestrian Park in Arcadia and will feature Team and Individual competitions in Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing. A total of 200 athletes and horses will compete in the equestrian events.

Santa Anita Park Confirmed as Venue for Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Equestrian Events

Lausanne (SUI)- Santa Anita Park, located in proximity to the Los Angeles city area, has been confirmed as the venue of the equestrian events of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28).

“Santa Anita Park will be a spectacular venue for the LA28 Olympic equestrian events,” FEI President Ingmar De Vos said.

“The FEI has very fond memories of Santa Anita, which had hosted the equestrian events at the 1984 Olympic Games. The venue is set to offer a breathtaking stage for all the Olympic equestrian competitions and the proximity to LA City will undoubtedly attract many spectators to Santa Anita. We look forward to continuing our cooperation with LA28 to deliver spectacular equestrian events at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.”

“I would like to thank the FEI on behalf of the IOC for the active engagement in all the discussions regarding the venue,” IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell said. “We have created a strong partnership with the Organizing Committee and the city of Los Angeles, which enjoys the full support of the local equestrian community.”

"We have the utmost confidence in the LA28 Organizing Committee, and we anticipate exceptional equestrian sport will take place at this special legacy venue from the 1984 Olympic Games. We are also extremely pleased that the IOC has confirmed the athlete quotas across the disciplines for 2028 and they remain unchanged from 2024,” said Bill Moroney, Chief Executive Officer of US Equestrian.

Santa Anita features an on-course veterinary clinic and has hosted some of the major Thoroughbred events in the USA including the Breeders Cup. The famous champion thoroughbred racehorse Seabiscuit won his last race at Santa Anita in 1940. The facility also hosts a CSI3* as well as a FEI Jumping World Cup™ Qualifier CSI5*-W, which this year will take place in November.

Santa Anita covers 130Ha (320 acres) and includes a 340m-long (1,100-foot) grandstand that seats 26,000 spectators. The track infield area, which resembles a park with picnic tables and large trees, can accommodate a crowd of 50,000. The Park has 61 barns that can house more than 2,000 horses.

The venue for the Para Equestrian events will be announced at a later date following the review and approval of the International Paralympic Committee Governing Board.

The LA28 Olympic Games will take place from 14 to 30 July 2028 whereas the Paralympics are scheduled from 15 to 27 August 2028. Details on the LA28 Olympic equestrian events and quota places are available here.

THE HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES

The Summer Olympic Games, first held in 1896, is an international multi-sport event that is hosted by a different city every four years. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) organizes the games and oversees the host city's preparations, with support from each individual sport's International Federation (IF). In each Olympic event, gold medals are awarded for first place, silver medals are awarded for second place, and bronze medals are awarded for third; this tradition began in 1904. The Summer Paralympic Games is also awarded to the same city that hosts the Summer Olympic Games. The Summer Olympic Games includes the disciplines of Dressage, Eventing and Jumping, while the Summer Paralympic Games includes the discipline of Para-Dressage. Equestrian remains one of the only sports in which men and women compete as equals in all events.

The United States has hosted four Summer Olympics (1904, 1932, 1984, 1996). The United States also leads the all-time medal table. In 1964, when women were first permitted to compete in Olympic eventing, the U.S. fielded the first eventing team to include a woman, Lana DuPont, who contributed to a Team Silver medal-win. The U.S. has also fielded teams in each of the Paralympic Games since para-dressage’s inception at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, capturing four Individual medals.
